AXA Health and Bupa are two of the biggest names in UK private medical insurance (PMI). They are also two of the insurers our clients choose most. We place policies with both, so this comparison comes from arranging cover and helping with claims, not from reading brochures.
This guide compares AXA Health with Bupa By You, checked against the insurers' own material in September 2026. AXA sells more than one individual plan, and which one you can buy depends on how you buy it, so start with the box below.
Through a broker, including us, AXA's individual plans are Personal Health and Health For You. Both use a five-year moratorium look-back, the same as Bupa.
AXA also sells a separate AXA Health Plan direct, which is not available through brokers. We mention it only where the distribution difference matters. The benefit comparison below uses Personal Health and Health For You, because those are the AXA individual plans we can arrange.
AXA's current one-month-free offer for new customers is also only available through a broker, not direct.
Quick verdict: AXA or Bupa?
- AXA Personal Health is the broader of AXA’s two broker plans in several areas. Its current broker material shows no yearly monetary limit on the therapies option or eligible mental-health treatment, and it can use AXA’s Guided specialist route.
- AXA Health For You has tighter limits and its own hospital list. Therapies are capped at £500 a year; mental health is capped at 30 inpatient/day-patient days and £1,000 outpatient treatment a year.
- Bupa By You uses a different structure. Comprehensive can include private diagnosis with selectable outpatient limits, while Treatment and Care is focused on treatment after diagnosis.
- All three broker options use a five-year moratorium look-back, so medical history does not create an automatic AXA-versus-Bupa shortcut.
- Compare the quote, not the badge. Hospital access, outpatient cover, cancer choice, mental-health benefits, excess and underwriting can change the value materially.
